Martin was a long way from home, but he could not have felt more at home. His entire life had been preparing him for this. He was young, but already he had experience, confidence and a talent that was honed in hundreds of performances to sell out audiences in Dubbo, Port Augusta, Wagga Wagga... and the list goes on and on!

Steve Allen, the host of the most highly rated prime-time television show in the world blindfolded Martin. He read the minds of Zsa Zsa Gabor, other celebrities and transmitted information telepathically, to his assistant several city blocks away. The demonstration was a huge success. The act literally stunned the USA. The television audience of millions had never seen anything like this before. A similar presentation was repeated a few nights later. After just a few weeks in the USA, the "boy from the bush" became a coast-to-coast sensation

After a decade of "hard labour" entertaining the outback, he was an overnight success in the USA. Rock Martin awoke in Hollywood one morning to see his name "Martin St James" in the Bibles of America's show business -the newspapers, Variety Magazine and The Hollywood Reporter. They shouted "E.S.P." in large letters: "Exciting, Sensational Performer". "Martin St. James, the Mental Continental, on Steve Allen Tonight".

Steve Allen and Irwin Zucker the leading PR man in Hollywood at the time had rechristened him. When they told Martin that that was his new name he said, "Wow, I like it!"

Martin was on his way to a successful career worldwide. It wasn't easy for a foreigner to appear on national TV without citizenship or a green card. In fact, he just had a tourist visa and that made it illegal! Martin had just got up and taken his dream to the US, not knowing he needed a special visa. If he had known, he may never have made it past the paperwork! But, now he faced deportation.

Steve Allen and his associates supported Martin and he was accepted and made a member of the American Guild of Variety Artists, The Screen Actors Guild, and other unions. He had the support of the press and famous personalities, but to earn the right to perform in America, Martin and his partner had to prove that no persons in the US could perform the E.S.P. act the way they were able to – and nobody could!

Martin was billed as the man with the seeing hands. The immigration department issued him with a H1 visa for distinguished credit and ability, something that was usually awarded to scientists and visiting dignitaries, etc.

There was something magic about Martin's experiences in the USA. His magician style stage act crept into his reality. His art imitated life and his reality copied his art. Information came to him in the most unlikely way.
